Customizing Comfort: A One-of-a-Kind Serape Bedroll Build
In life I have found that the best gifts are the ones that combine utility with beauty laced by personal style. This week, I had the pleasure of working with a client on a truly special project: a custom 4” bedroll tailored for her husband, designed to perfectly blend his aesthetic preferences with high-quality audio functionality. Here is a behind-the-scenes look at how this bespoke piece came together.
The goal was well defined, to create a functional bedroll that didn't sacrifice style or sound quality. The client had these specific requirements:
Size: A sleek 4” diameter to readily fit in front of the cruisers windscreen. 16” maximum width
Audio: A Single DIN head unit paired with larger 5.25” speakers. Head unit provided Bluetooth as well as USB music selection.
Aesthetic: A custom-chosen serape blanket and a specific front color scheme to fit her husband’s personality. Black mounting straps with buckles.
Balance: Component selection fit within a specific budget without sacrificing build quality. I opted for a setup designed for clear, consistent playback rather than extreme peak loudness, the result was a balanced audio profile that sounds great in the saddle. It’s proof that you don't need an unlimited budget to get a custom, professional-grade result.
The Build Process
To make 5.25” speakers fit seamlessly within a 4" structural constraint while ensuring premium sound, I designed custom expanded baffles. This allowed the mounting of larger commercial components securely. Four inch schedule 40 tube was cut to length, machined to mount the single DIN low profile bezel and holes drilled to fit the tube end baffles.
Once the core mounting components were at hand, it was time for the upholstery. The client chose a vibrant serape, which was cleanly captured by the oversized baffles during assembly. This meticulous attention to detail ensures the blanket stays tight, durable, and looks fantastic.
The Key features of this build included:
Custom Expanding Baffles: Getting 5.25” speakers whose magnets were as large as the ID of the tube required extended stand off baffles. This provided maximum sound in a compact design.
Clean Component mounts: Use of a high performance medium density foam underlayment provided a soft touch hiding only one layer of serape. This provided a professional finish.
Easy Installation: Black buckle straps were provided to mount the tube to handle bars. A dedicated gland mount for wire penetration at the back, making it a breeze for the end-user to install.
Final Result
The build went exceptionally smoothly, resulting in a stout compact personalized bedroll that exceeded expectations. Upon receiving the finished product the client was absolutely ecstatic making this project a complete success!
